Mental health problems in pregnancy and following childbirth are treatable

Welcome to the
GLOBAL ALLIANCE FOR
MATERNAL MENTAL HEALTH

Working together for better outcomes for mothers, babies, and families

The Global Alliance for Maternal Mental Health (GAMMH) is a coalition of international organisations, national alliances, and associate member organisations working to improve the mental health and wellbeing of women, babies, partners, and families during pregnancy and the first year after birth (the perinatal period).

With a particular focus on least-developed countries and low-resource settings, GAMMH addresses the unique barriers to care where access to mental health support is limited or unavailable, partnering with local leaders to strengthen services, policies, and awareness.

Maternal mental health conditions—such as depression and anxiety—are the most common complications of pregnancy and childbirth, driving significant human and economic costs across generations, yet they remain consistently under-prioritised in services and research.

GAMMH’s goal is to prevent avoidable suffering and to ensure child development is not compromised by the global failure to provide timely, compassionate, and effective prevention, support, and treatment for mothers’ mental health.

Mental health problems in pregnancy and following childbirth are roughly twice as common in least developed countries as they are in highly developed countries.  If the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are to be achieved by 2030, maternal mental health must be prioritised.
